Diabetes Awareness Month
November 18th, 2009 and November 20th, 2009
November has been designated as American Diabetes Month. This year there is a new call to action from the American Diabetes Association to STOP DIABETES! It is an effort to bring diabetes and its huge toll on the nation's health into sharper focus for Americans. In spite of the fact that 23.6 million people have been diagnosed with the disease and another 57 million are at risk, research by the ADA has shown that many people are still unaware of how serious diabetes is. The disease kills more people in the US than AIDS and breast cancer combined. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure and the number 1 cause of new blindness in adult ages 20-74. The financial cost - a whopping 174 billion in 2007.
On Friday, November 20th the Department of Health Promotion will be holding a Diabetes Awareness Day with free screenings at 428 Columbus Avenue in New Haven from 9am-4pm.
On Wednesday, November 18th, there will be free information and screenings at the Wilson Public Library, 303 Washington Avenue, New Haven.
Stop by to learn more about the disease and find out if you are at risk. Do your part, and together we can STOP DIABETES!
