Information about the "Employee Walking Challenge"

This program will begin on Monday, January 12th, 2004.  This team walking event is for Hill Health Center Employees who are ready to increase their physical activity.  Walkers have less incidence of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other killer diseases, live longer, and get mental health and spiritual benefits.  The Department of Health Promotion is very interested in getting people to walk because of these health benefits.  Teams of employees will measure the number of steps they take each day using a electronic device called a pedometer.  Each employee will record their daily steps (both at home and at work) on a weekly walking form (the form is available below) and report them to their team leader on a weekly basis.  Teams will compete with each other to see who walks the most.  The first team to walk 1860 miles (the distance from the New Haven, Connecticut  to Key West, Florida) will win!!!  If each team members is walking regularly, it should take teams only about 5 months to travel this distance.  The team that wins will receive a special prize that will be announced at a later date.  That's all there is to it.

Summary of Walking Goal

The red line on the map to the left indicates your Teams walking goal.  The first Team to walk the distance from New Haven, Connecticut to Key West, Florida will win the Walking Challenge.  Every week this map will be updated to show each Teams progress on the map.  Each Team will have a different color arrow representing their Team.  Have fun!!!

The East Coast Greenway®
Walkers, cyclists, and other trail advocates have joined forces around an audacious project, a 2,600 mile traffic-free path linking East Coast cities from Maine to Florida. Launched only 10 years ago, this vision for an urban alternative to the highly popular Appalachian Trail is quickly becoming a reality.

The 2004 Employee Walking Challenge Award Ceremony

Well it's over.  Thanks to all who participated in the Employee Walking Challenge and the Awards Ceremony!  The award ceremony was intended to celebrate all teams who participated in the challenge.  The Team results are available by clicking here.  Team participants are available by clicking here. The food was fantastic, with a hint of tropical flair, thanks to Grant St. Partnership.  A special thanks to the Human Resources Department  for sponsoring the event!  Each team contributed at least one member to attend the lunch and receive their certificates.  We were able to witness each team’s progress first hand on the beautiful map loaned to us by East Coast Greenway (Thanks, Bill!).  A special thanks to Sharon Bradford (standing in the picture on the right) and Mimi Zoladia from the We WIN program who have been more than supportive in this entire event.  Even after all that walking, everyone was still in a great mood and when told about the opportunity to be challenged by another organization the response was: “Bring it on”!
