The Low fat Doesn’t Have to Mean Low   Taste Cook Off

The Health Promotion Department is seeking employees to participate in a cook off featuring your favorite low fat recipe.  Participants will prepare a pre-approved recipe that will be sampled and voted upon by patients in the main waiting area.  Prizes will be awarded to the winners!  Recipes will be approved based upon their fat content, affordability, and ease of preparation.  Join us and demonstrate that low fat does not have to mean low taste!  Funds will be provided if needed to prepare the recipe for the cook off.  Storage, heating and refrigeration of recipes will be provided on the day of the cook off.

Project leaders (photo on right) from left to right include Pricilla Fonseca, summer student, Brenda Galvin, RD, CDE, Adult & Community Nutritionist, and Diane Magalhaes, CHES, Health Educator.

Cook-Off Results

Thanks to all who participated in the cook-off.  The results were as follows:

Week 1: Spinach pie and broccoli bread tied

Week 2: Low fat brownies won over Spinach dip

Week 3: Banana bread won over yogurt pie

Week 4: Seviche (shrimp salsa) won over low fat pound cake

Most of the votes for each week were very very close…no more than 4 votes difference at times. So, because they were so close, we decided to give each participant a prize for their efforts. Participants claimed their prizes in the WIC/Nutrition/Health Promotion Department.  Thanks to all that participated in this educational activity.  We had a great time with this contest.
